Take Action for Your Kidney Health

Kidney Action Week is a great opportunity to learn more about your kidneys and the important role they play in keeping you healthy.

Your kidneys work hard every day. They filter waste and excess fluid from your blood, help regulate blood pressure, balance important minerals and produce hormones that support your overall health. However, kidney disease can develop gradually and often has few or no symptoms in its early stages.

Who is at risk of kidney disease?

Kidney disease can affect anyone, but your risk may be higher if you:

  • Have diabetes or high blood pressure
  • Have heart disease
  • Have a family history of kidney disease
  • Are overweight or obese
  • Smoke
  • Are over 60 years of age
  • Have previously experienced kidney problems

Know your kidney numbers

One of the best ways to look after your kidneys is to have your kidney health checked regularly, particularly if you have risk factors.

Your GP may recommend simple tests such as a blood test to check kidney function and a urine test to look for signs of kidney damage. Your blood pressure may also be checked, as high blood pressure can both contribute to and result from kidney disease.

Small steps can make a difference

Looking after your kidneys is part of looking after your overall health. Maintaining a healthy weight, staying active, eating a balanced diet, drinking appropriately, not smoking and managing conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure can all help protect your kidney health.

If you are concerned about your kidney health or have risk factors for kidney disease, speak with your GP about whether a kidney health check is appropriate for you.

This Kidney Action Week, take a moment to check in on your kidney health. Early detection can make a real difference.
