Know the Signs, Reduce Your Risk, and Take Control of Your Health

Every year, Diabetes Week raises awareness about diabetes, encouraging Australians to understand their risk, recognise the early signs, and seek support before complications develop.

At Strathalbyn Medical Clinic, we’re committed to helping our community prevent, detect, and manage diabetes through early intervention, education, and ongoing care.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic condition that occurs when the body is unable to regulate blood glucose (blood sugar) levels effectively.

There are three main types of diabetes:

Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the body’s immune system attacks the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. It usually develops during childhood or early adulthood, although it can occur at any age. People with Type 1 diabetes require lifelong insulin treatment.

Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes in Australia. It develops when the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn’t produce enough insulin to keep blood glucose levels within a healthy range.

Many people have Type 2 diabetes for years before symptoms become noticeable, making regular health checks incredibly important.

Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes develops during pregnancy and usually resolves after the baby is born. However, it increases the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes later in life for both mother and child.

Common Signs and Symptoms

Early symptoms can be subtle and are often overlooked.

Speak with your GP if you notice:

  • Increased thirst

  • Frequent urination

  • Feeling tired or lacking energy

  • Blurred vision

  • Unexplained weight loss

  • Slow-healing cuts or wounds

  • Frequent skin infections or thrush

  • Tingling or numbness in your hands or feet

Some people with Type 2 diabetes experience no symptoms at all.

Who is at Risk?

You may have an increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes if you:

  • Are over 40 years of age

  • Have a family history of diabetes

  • Are overweight or carrying excess weight around your waist

  • Have high blood pressure or high cholesterol

  • Have had gestational diabetes

  • Have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

  • Are physically inactive

  • Smoke

Your GP can help assess your individual risk and recommend appropriate screening.

When Should You See Your GP?

It’s a good idea to book an appointment if you:

  • Are experiencing any symptoms of diabetes

  • Have one or more risk factors

  • Have previously had high blood glucose levels

  • Have a strong family history of diabetes

  • Would like a diabetes risk assessment

  • Need support with weight management, nutrition, or exercise

Early diagnosis allows treatment to begin sooner and significantly reduces the risk of complications.

  • Maintaining a healthy weight

  • Quitting smoking

  • Attending regular health checks with your GP
